The study examined the relationship between competitive culture and innovation management at Itojo Hospital in Ntungamo District, Uganda. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining quantitative and qualitative data to generate a comprehensive understanding of the study variables. The study population comprised 205 staff members and service users, including administrators, doctors, medical assistants, nurses, midwives, laboratory technicians, and patients. A sample of 179 participants was selected using the Krejcie and Morgan sample-size determination table. Of these, 160 participated, representing an 89.4% response rate; 122 provided quantitative data, and 38 provided qualitative data. The findings showed a weak but statistically significant positive relationship between competitive culture and innovation management (r = 0.203, p = 0.020). Qualitative findings further indicated that innovation helped the hospital attract clients, sustain operations, and strengthen its competitive position. The study concluded that competitive culture contributed positively, although modestly, to innovation management. It recommended that hospital management establish innovation-focused performance targets, recognise and reward innovative staff and teams, benchmark against high-performing hospitals, and promote constructive competition alongside collaborative and learning-oriented practices.
