The Shilluk recording at the center of this item is a moral tale. In Shilluk villages, people eat together, at the center of the village. Food from the various families is brought there at meal times. Deng, the main character in this story, is a hard-working man. He provides his house with good food but he himself does not taste the food brought from his house, because people deceitfully sit in the centre of the village before he goes there (the best food is brought first). So, Deng decides one day to eat the best fish in his compound and he had porridge brought to the centre of the village instead. People understood the message that Deng intended to send to them. So, they stopped their bad habit of going early. This item consists of a recorded Shilluk narrative (wav file), accompanied with annotation (in Praat TextGrid) and associated information: metadata, permissions and speaker questionnaire. The associated information is also summarized, in a spreadsheet. The TextGrid annotation includes Shilluk orthography, phonological transcription, morpheme glosses, translation, and comments.
