A. Chebanne and B. Gabanamotse-Mogara, University of Botswana. Khoisan languages are said to be difficult to write because they have complex and extensive sound systems. Khoisan languages present an important linguistic diversity which further complicates the development of literacy resources. Further, some of the Khoisan languages are generally under-researched, marginalized and experiencing sustained sociolinguistic forces of endangerment that threaten their existence. The researchers have come up with IPA writing systems that some users have deemed impractical and the existence of different writing conventions present challenges in Khoisan literacy development. The chapter will argue that in view of commonalities in the phonetics of sounds of these languages, there is need to be economic in developing strategies for orthographies to achieve literacy for all and to overcome barriers occasioned by illiteracy. The concept of harmonization of orthographies will create a common enabling environment for the development of a writing system.
