In this article, we analyze two palatal features in Mauritian Creole based on an oral corpus of 19 speakers: the nasal /ɲ/ and the affrication of the anterior plosives /t/ and /d/ before [i], [j], [y], and [ɥ]. The acoustic analysis includes 106 occurrences of /ɲ/ and 220 occurrences of /t/ and /d/ in potential affrication contexts. The results show considerable variation in the realization of the nasal, with [ɲ] most frequently produced in onset or coda position after [i], [a], or [ɔ] (e.g. gagne [ɡaɲe]), [nj] occurring in similar contexts (e.g. gagne [ɡanje]), and [j] more frequent in coda position and often accompanied by nasalization of the preceding vowel (e.g. montagn [mɔ̃tãj]). The forms [n] (e.g. lalign [lalin]) and elision (e.g. lalign [lalĩː]) are more marginal. This variation appears to be mainly conditioned by syllabic position and segmental context rather than by social factors. The plosives show an almost systematic affrication, predominantly palatal ([ʧ], [ʤ]; e.g. dimounn [ʤimun]) but also alveolar ([ʦ], [ʣ]; e.g. dizef [ʣizef]), with no significant effect of phonological or sociodemographic variables, suggesting free allophony between the two affricate types.
