Performance-driven flexibility: reconceptualizing residential spatial hierarchies for climate-responsive and multi-generational living in urban Nigeria

Introduction Urban housing in Nigeria continues to be organized around a spatial hierarchy that it inherited rather than chose. The formal parlour sits at the top, bedrooms are treated as sealed private cells, and the kitchen and outdoor edges are demoted to service status. This paper argues that the inherited hierarchy has quietly become a liability, performing poorly against two pressures that now define daily life in cities such as Abuja: a hot, harmattan-prone climate that the grid cannot reliably cool, and households that are stubbornly multi-generational rather than neatly nuclear. Methods The study is qualitative and interpretive. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 senior architects, 5 architecture academics, and 26 residents across seven Abuja neighbourhoods spanning a deliberate range of income levels and housing types (43 participants in total). Participants were selected purposively on a maximum-variation logic, and transcripts were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis, with themes retained only where corroborated across more than one participant group. Results Four themes ran through the interviews: the tyranny of the parlour, climate treated as a mechanical problem, the multi-generational squeeze, and flexibility experienced as costly survival. Residents already flex their homes constantly, but informally, expensively, and against the grain of the original design. Discussion The study proposes performance-driven flexibility as a way of reordering domestic space, in which the rooms that actually deliver thermal comfort, generational accommodation, and economic resilience are given spatial priority, and in which the plan is designed to be reconfigured over a day, a season, and a lifetime. A three-vector framework (climatic, demographic, and economic performance) is translated into a matrix of implementable strategies and a staged route to adoption through design practice, developer incentives, and the building code. The contribution is a shift in the question architects ask: not how many rooms a house has, but what each room is made to do.
