Post Colonial Approach: Involving the community in Archaeological Heritage Management at the Domboshamba Hills, Northeastern Botswana

The management of African heritage has historically been dominated by colonial narratives, leaving communities voiceless. However, literature shows that communities have an interest and desire to be involved in their heritage management. Local people have contributed to the survival of archaeological sites through their knowledge and custodianship systems. This research investigated community involvement in the management of the Zimbabwe Culture archaeological heritage site of Domboshaba Hills in Botswana. The study used post-colonial theory to examine the historical and cultural impact of colonialism on heritage, which often neglected local communities. The results showed that the communities surrounding Domboshaba Hills have strong cultural and historical ties with the site and a strong desire to be involved in its management. However, many communities feel excluded by official heritage authorities in the management of the site. The study recommends that the Botswana official heritage management system should incorporate local communities in archaeological heritage management.
