People in poor countries face strong redistribution norms (kinship or social tax). Beyond transfers, employment provision is a salient channel of redistribution. The literature emphasizes the role of social preferences (e.g. altruism, fairness or reciprocity) on the workplace focuses on workers and their labor supply. Instead, little is know about how managers' redistribution concerns affect the organization of production. We design a novel survey experiment to identify preferences for redistribution via employment. Using our tool, we elicit such preferences for redistribution via employment among workers, managers and owners of small and medium firms in Kampala, Uganda. We also record measures of firm productivity, size, capital share, as well as workers and management practices, and plan correlate these measures with preference for redistribution via employment.
