This study investigates the preparedness of Records and Information Management (RIM) professionals to adopt Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based RIM systems, addressing a gap in individual-level research, particularly in low AI readiness regions. Guided by the Technology Readiness Index (TRI 2.0) framework and incorporating the construct of AI identity, we surveyed RIM professionals across six Eastern and Southern African countries using purposive and snowballing sampling techniques. PLS-SEM was conducted on a sample of 418 responses. The results reveal that optimism and innovativeness significantly enhance AI readiness. Contrary to its traditional role as a barrier, insecurity positively influenced readiness, a finding we theorise may reflect threat-driven upskilling in resource-constrained contexts. AI readiness predicts both AI identity and the intention to use AI, with AI identity mediating adoption. The TRI 2.0 inhibitors (discomfort and insecurity) were unreliable, raising questions about adopting Western-developed instruments in other contexts, highlighting the need for tailored measurement items. This study emphasises the need for AI literacy initiatives and targeted training to manage insecurity. This is the first empirical study to employ PLS-SEM in examining psychological and identity-related mechanisms underlying AI adoption among RIM professionals in Africa.
