Privacy concerns in facial recognition technology at a private higher education institution in South Africa.

Abstract: Facial recognition technology is becoming increasingly prevalent in various sectors, including education, due to its potential to enhance security and operational efficiency. However, its implementation raises significant privacy concerns, especially within educational settings. This project aims to explore these concerns at a private higher education institution in South Africa. Through a comprehensive analysis of public perceptions and attitudes towards facial recognition technology, the study seeks to uncover the ethical, legal, and societal implications of its use in this context. By conducting surveys with students, the research will identify the primary privacy issues associated with facial recognition technology and propose recommendations for addressing these concerns. The findings are expected to contribute to the ongoing discourse on balancing technological advancements with privacy rights in educational institutions.
