This cross-sectional study investigates the production and reproductive performances, trait preferences, breeding practices, and egg quality traits of improved chicken breeds in rural, peri-urban, and urban settings in Adigrat town and Ganta-Afeshum woreda. A total of 180 improved chicken breed owners were randomly selected and interviewed using a pre-tested structured questionnaire and focus group discussions. Data analysis involved ranking index, chi-square tests, independent sample tests, and ANOVA. Results indicated that Bovans Brown and Sasso breeds exhibited varying performances across different settings, with significant differences in body weight, age at first laying, and egg production rates. Key findings suggest that while Bovans Brown chickens excel in egg weight, Sasso chickens may offer a balanced option for meat and egg production. Challenges such as disease, lack of scientific knowledge, and feed shortages were identified as major constraints. Recommendations for improved husbandry practices and disease management interventions are discussed.
