Psychological and Linguistic Features in the Natural Language of Black Individuals Experiencing Mental Health Symptoms

Natural language is essential in understanding the complexities of mental health and mental health symptoms. Additionally, historically within the Black community, there has been a stigma around mental health. To date, there have been no corpus linguistics studies examining the natural language that Black individuals utilize when discussing their mental health. Further exploration of this could lead to better outcomes in mental health treatment for Black individuals. Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) is often used to examine and evaluate words used in specific corpora. In the current study, Reddit and subreddit blog posts written by Black individuals on a Black mental health subreddit forum were analyzed to explore different linguistic categories including broad psycholinguistic features and processes, usage rate of linguistic processes, and usage rate of psychological processes.
