Re-skilling undergraduates for the fourth industrial revolution: Evidence from Osun State Universities

This study examined the role of Nigerian universities in re-skilling undergraduates for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). A descriptive survey design was adopted, involving 139 respondents comprising lecturers and students from selected universities in South-West Nigeria. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire (α = 0.84; CVI = 0.79) and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings revealed that current university curricula are inadequately aligned with 4IR demands, particularly in the integration of digital technologies and practical skill acquisition. Respondents identified critical skills such as digital literacy, problem-solving, critical thinking, and data analysis as essential for 4IR readiness. There was a consensus across public and private universities on the need for curriculum reform, enhanced industry collaboration, and investment in technological infrastructure. The study concludes that Nigerian universities must adopt innovative, technology-driven approaches to effectively re-skill undergraduates for global competitiveness in the 4IR era.
