This is the fourth of a series of video recordings made during the first celebration of a ritual reception the Ngun villagers wanted to grant Pierpaolo Di Carlo.This video file has been shot with a fixed camera mounted on top of a small mound at the edge of the Ngun palace square. After an attempt (soon aborted) made by the latest of the chief's wives (a woman from the neighboring village of Kung) to perform a "betsOn" (which is a typical Kung women's song sung in that language), the villagers follow the percussionists in their performance of m@nnaN rhythms. M@nnaN is a set of masks associated with the palace. During these dances, elderly women perform a staff dance, where they both display their social status (they are part of the chief's family or of equal status but from other villages) and their sociable attitude towards the foreigner (amongst other things). One of the masks of m@nnaN is present for only a portion of the musical performance, whose most part is carried out in absence of any masks.
