Relevance of Spectator Theory of Church Leadership among African Pentecostal Membership

Spectator Theory in Africa sought to establish a balance of church administration and authority between leadership and membership. Many of the Pentecostal churches in Africa are under the control of one or few overseers. Church members are without ownership or stake holding rights. Consequently, mission of the church is stifled into the hands of few, and church members purchase the services of ministers like consumers in the marketplace. This situation entrenches clericalism, in which leadership hold and welds all church powers. The method adopted in this article was the mixed approach. It combined the quantitative and the qualitative methods. The study adopted Content Analysis research design. The data were elicited from extant literature and Bible texts. These were combined in themes and patterns to discuss the relevant issues in different headings. The study has the implication of an urgent need for the participation of members in the church services, worship and management. This implies the adoption of the diverse spiritual gifts of church members, which is the foundation of priesthood of all believers.
