Religious Conflict and Church Growth in Nigeria: Underlying Issues and Sustainable Responses

This study explores the religious conflict and Church growth in Nigeria; pointing out issues and sustainable response. In a nation marked by diverse religious affiliations, ethnic tensions, and socio-economic disparities, conflicts often hinder the growth of religious institutions. This research highlights key determinants such as political instability, inter-religious tensions, and socio-economic challenges that exacerbate conflicts. It examines how these factors affect church attendance at the denomination level, membership growth, and overall church sustainability. Furthermore, the paper discusses sustainable solutions, including conflict resolution mechanisms, community engagement initiatives, and interfaith dialogues that can foster peace and promote church growth. By advocating for collaborative efforts among religious leaders, policymakers, and community stakeholders, the study aims to provide a comprehensive framework for addressing conflicts while enhancing the capacity of churches to thrive in Nigeria’s complex socio-religious landscape. This study see need for proactive strategies to mitigate conflicts and harness the potential for growth within the church, ultimately contributing to a more harmonious society. This study hereby recommends that church leadership should embrace peacebuilding strategies among denominations and this should also birth inter religious dialogue among other religion.
