Reorienting African Health Systems from Treatment to Prevention

This research examines the importance of preventive health as a foundation for stronger, more equitable and sustainable health systems in Africa. It argues that health policy cannot depend primarily on treating disease after it has emerged and that greater emphasis should be placed on prevention, health promotion, early detection, risk reduction and action on the social and environmental determinants of health. The paper examines how preventive approaches can reduce avoidable illness, mortality and healthcare costs while strengthening population health and resilience. It considers the importance of primary health care, immunisation, maternal and child health, nutrition, sanitation, clean water, health education, screening, surveillance, community health systems and effective public-health institutions. The research argues that a preventive-health orientation should be integrated into national development strategies because population health is closely connected to education, productivity, poverty reduction, economic development and human capital. It proposes a broader policy approach in which African states strengthen prevention alongside curative services and build health systems capable of anticipating health risks rather than responding only after disease and crisis have occurred.
