The data is from an on-going study aimed at understanding the epidemiology and disease burden of RSV-associated pneumonia cases in Kilifi. This study was specifically interested in the introduction, spread and evolution of the novel RSV-A genotype ON1 in Kilifi. Respiratory swab samples (combined nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal) were collected from September 2010 through August 2015 from children ages 1 day to <5 years admitted to Kilifi County Hospital (KCH) with syndromically defined severe or very severe pneumonia, screened for RSV and G-gene sequenced (RSV positives) using the Sanger method. Also included is are two global comparison sequence datasets used in the analyses: (1) RSV-A genotype ON1 contemporenous sequence dataset, and (2) RSV-B genotype BA sequences collected between 1998 and 2006.

Data Availability5> The sequences published in this article (also uploaded here) have been deposited in GenBank (accession nos. KX453303–KX453534); previously reported sequences from Kilifi added to this analysis have also been deposited in GenBank (accession nos. KF587911–KF588014) (13).
