This replication package uses the Afrobarometer Round 10 merged microdata file, provided directly by Afrobarometer to the author. The file covers 38 African countries and 50,961 respondents. Users seeking access should contact Afrobarometer or use the public release when it becomes available.
The analysis constructs country-level measures of democratic attitudes directly from respondent-level microdata using Afrobarometer’s within-household survey weights and valid-response denominators. The main country-level variables are democracy support, turnover support, the democracy-turnover gap, perceived democratic supply, satisfaction with democracy, rejection of military rule, non-partisanship, and trust in the ruling party. The package also includes hand-coded country indicators for alternation history and dominant-party rule, documented in the supplementary materials.
The individual-level analysis uses respondent-level variables from the same Round 10 file, including perceived democratic supply, turnover support, democracy preference, partisanship, trust in opposition parties, trust in the ruling party, voting in the last election, perceived election fairness, age, gender, education, urban residence, contact with party officials, and anti-party stance.
