This dataset contains results from the Fishery Patterns Mapping (FPM) survey that was conducted as part of the Heshimu Bahari project, supported by USAID, across the whole Tanzanian coastline, including Zanzibar.
The FPM data contains records of individual fishing grounds. Data was collected through a community survey conducted with representatives from every fishing gear across every coastal community in Tanzania. The data was later validated on the ground, harmonized, and processed to prepare maps of fishing effort for the various fishing gears and seasons. A detailed description of the processing method is in the attached technical report.
For each fishing ground, metadata was collected, including information on the name of the fishing ground, level of fishing effort per fishing ground, gear and season, observed presence of marine mammals, sharks, rays, and sea turtles, as well as availability of fishers to establish a fishing ground as a temporary or permanent closure.
