Abstract This article critically examines the Gedeo Baallee indigenous governance system of environment in three domains: the sustenance of agroforestry, climate adaptation and equity in resource rights. Theoretically, the study applied Socio-ecological Systems (SES) and Political Ecology theories. Moreover, the study employed qualitative ethnographic research design. Specifically, relevant data were collected through key informant interviews, focus group discussions, and field observations. The finding reveals that the Gedeo Baalleeindigenous ecological governance system contributes in marshalling protection of ecosystems, adaptation to climate change and social justice equally. Consequently, it is recommended that indigenous systems such as Baallee should be recognized in national environmental policies to encourage their contextual application on a scale.
