The study is grounded in the increasing reliance on herbal medicines for the treatment of respiratory conditions such as coughs, colds, and related ailments, particularly in low- and middle-income settings where access, affordability, and cultural acceptance drive widespread use.
Purpose of the Study
The primary purpose of this research is to systematically map and synthesize existing evidence on the microbiological, chemical, and toxicological risks associated with herbal cough preparations. Specifically, the study seeks to:
Identify and characterize contaminants (microbial pathogens, heavy metals, pesticide residues, and pharmaceutical adulterants) present in herbal cough mixtures.
Compare the safety profiles of products from informal markets in Ghana with those produced under regulated conditions in developed countries.
Examine how factors such as dosage form, manufacturing practices, supply chain integrity, and regulatory oversight influence product safety.
Highlight evidence gaps and propose actionable strategies to improve quality assurance and public health protection.
By adopting a scoping review methodology, the study provides a broad and structured overview of available literature spanning laboratory analyses, clinical trials, surveillance studies, and regulatory reports published between 2000 and 2025.
