Nigerian British author Buchi Emecheta's large body of work centers on themes related to survival in the face of abusive power. Examining colonial indoctrination into the ideology of British “superiority,” her novels condemn the legacy of colonialism in Nigeria and the racism Africans encounter in Britain. Just as intently, she questions traditional African practices that devalue and subjugate women.
