Africa stands at a critical juncture where a youthful population meets an accelerating digital
revolution, yet a persistent skills gap threatens to exclude the continent from the global knowledge
economy. This study investigates the current state of digital skills development across five African
countries and examines the alignment between educational outputs and labour market demands in
the technology sector. Using a quantitative cross-sectional survey design, data were collected from
450 respondents, including university graduates, information technology employers, and
vocational training instructors between January and March, 2026. The findings reveal that only
32% of graduates possess intermediate digital competencies required for entry-level knowledge
economy roles, while 68% of employers report difficulty finding locally trained talent with
advanced data analytics, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence fundamentals. Furthermore,
the results indicate significant gender disparities in advanced digital skills acquisition, with female
participation in technical training programmes standing at 28%. The study concludes that
fragmented policy implementation, outdated curricula, and inadequate digital infrastructure
collectively undermine skills development. Recommendations include establishing regional
digital skills standards, integrating work-based learning models, and creating public-private
partnerships for continuous educator upskilling. These findings provide actionable insights for
policymakers, development partners, and educational institutions seeking to position Africa as a
competitive participant in the digital economy.
