SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY IN ENUGU METROPOLIS, ENUGU STATE NIGERIA

The study examined solid waste management and environmental sustainability in Enugu Metropolis, Enugu State Nigeria. This study sought to determine the effect collection and transportation of solid waste on environmental sustainability in Enugu Metropolis, Enugu State Nigeria , ascertain the influence reuse and recycling of solid waste on environmental sustainability in Enugu Metropolis, Enugu State Nigeria and evaluate the effect treatment and disposal of solid waste on environmental sustainability in Enugu Metropolis, Enugu State Nigeria The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population was 1994, same was used as the sample because of it small natured. Data were collected through primary and secondary sources. Out of 333 copies of the questionnaire distributed, 320 copies (96.10 %) were returned while 13 copies (3.90%) were not returned. The hypotheses were tested using sample linear regression . The findings revealed that collection and transportation of solid waste has significant and positive effect on environmental sustainability in Enugu Metropolis, Enugu State Nigeria(B) = 0.512; t = 9.571; p< 0/5). Reuse and recycling of solid waste has a significant and positive influence on environmental sustainability in Enugu Metropolis, Enugu State Nigeria(B = 0.638; t = 14.04; p<0.6). Treatment and disposal of solid waste has a significant effect on environmental sustainability in Enugu Metropolis, Enugu State Nigeria ( B = 0.745; t = 11.707: p<0.5). The study concluded that Solid waste management is a growing problem around the world. The size of the problem and the lack of sustainable solutions is causing pollution, energy shortages and health problems. The study recommended that Management of ESWAMA Should use optimizing waste collection and transportation systems that will reduced greenhouse gas Emission, conservation of resources and protection of Ecosystems and promote sustainable development.
