This research investigates the potential recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) and other valuable elements from acid mine drainage (AMD), gold mine tailings, and sediments in closed and abandoned gold mining areas in Krugersdorp and Roodepoort, South Africa. It combines physicochemical characterisation, mineralogical analysis, geochemical modelling, and groundwater contaminant transport modelling to evaluate the economic feasibility of resource recovery and the environmental risks associated with toxic elements. The study proposes a sustainable, self-funded rehabilitation approach in which revenue generated from recovering valuable elements can support remediation strategies, thereby reducing the migration of contaminants to surrounding communities and water resources.
