Study on phenology, agronomic performance and correlation of yield-related traits in some okra genotypes

This study was conducted in 2020 at the Cross River State Agricultural Development Project (CADP) in Calabar, Nigeria, to examine the phenological cycles, agronomic performance, and correlation among three local landraces and two alien cultivars of okra. The genotypes employed were Clemsonspineless, Hire, Etighi Abakpa (Akim local short), Etighi Idok (Akim local long), and Otobo (Mbube local long). The experiment was conducted using a Randomised Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The data collected were subjected to analysis of variance ANOVA, and significant means were distinguished using the Duncan Multiple Range Test at a 5% significance level. The okra genotypes exhibited significant variation in all growth traits (P < 0.05), with the exception of plant height at 8 weeks after sowing (WAS) and the number of leaves at 5, 6, 7, and 8 WAS (P > 0.05). Clemsons  spineless variety exhibited reduced durations for all phenological traits. The fruit yield exhibited a robust, positive, and statistically significant correlation with fruit length (r = 0.777***). The findings of this study will aid okra breeders in the strategic planning of Okra breeding programmes via artificial hybridisation.
