Survey dataset: Smallholder preferences and willingness to pay for a digital agroecological information tool, Siaya County, Kenya, 2024 Overview This deposit contains the anonymized replication dataset for a cross-sectional household survey of 210 smallholder farming households in Siaya County, western Kenya. The survey elicited current agroecological information access and barriers, design preferences for a proposed digital agroecological information tool (tool types, content formats, interaction modes, update frequency, training arrangements, and concerns), and willingness to pay for such a tool. The dataset supports the manuscript: Bisase, L., Otinga, A. N. & Ariya, G. (2026). Willing but unconnected: smallholder farmers' preferences and willingness to pay for a digital agroecological information tool in Siaya County, Kenya. Submitted to Cogent Food & Agriculture. Files File Description Siaya_DigitalTool_Survey_2024_anonymized.csv Main dataset: 210 rows (households) × 64 variables codebook.csv Variable-by-variable codebook (name, description, coding) README.md This file Data collection Instrument/platform: Structured questionnaire administered face-to-face by trained enumerators using KoboToolbox. Period: October 2024 (exact interview dates removed for disclosure control; see Anonymization). Sampling: Consenting adult members of farming households, recruited purposively through ward-level networks across wards of Siaya County (Ugunja, Uyoma North, Yimbo East, Asembo West, Sakwa, Sindindi). Consent and ethics: The study was approved by the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI), Kenya (Licence No. NACOSTI/P/24/39785). Verbal informed consent was obtained from all respondents prior to interview; data were anonymized before analysis. Anonymization and statistical disclosure control The dataset contains no direct identifiers. Names, telephone contacts, GPS coordinates, and enumerator identifiers were removed prior to deposit. In addition: Interview dates were coarsened to month (interview month) to prevent linkage of individual interview days to specific villages or gatherings. Ward: the single respondent from North Sakwa ward was combined with West Sakwa into Sakwa (West & North) (n = 35) to prevent re-identification of a unique respondent within a small area. Free-text fields (training_pref_raw, wtp_no_reason, main_income_source) were reviewed and contain no personal or identifying information. Missing data Missingness is by questionnaire design only: wtp_amount_ksh was asked only of respondents definitely willing to pay (65 non-missing), and wtp_no_reason only of respondents unwilling to pay (20 non-missing). All analysis variables are complete (complete-case n = 210).
