::Football Brothers::

DESCRIPTION: Gift and Lucky are brothers. Lucky wants to play football on Gift's team.
 But Gift has a few requirements first.

This storyboard aims to elicit contrasts between different kinds of ability (physical, mental, inherent, learnt, etc.). It was created for use in South Africa, but can be adapted for use elsewhere (e.g. changing names).

TAGS: modality, negation, necessity, possibility, ability

CREATED BY: Thera Marie Crane

ILLUSTRATED BY: Matilda Carbo

The pdf can be modified. Please cite the original version when using or adapting.

The creation of this storyboard was financed by the Finnish Research Council grant "Accommodating Linguistic Diversity in Conversation: Modal Expressions and Multilingualism in South Africa“.

The format of this introduction is copied directly (and modified) from zenodo.org (by Vera Hohaus)

::Football Brothers Text::

1.    This is Gift.
2.    This is Gift’s little brother, Lucky.
3.    Gift and his friends have a football [soccer] team.
4.    Lucky wishes he could play on the team.
5.    He always asks Gift, “Can I play on your team?”
6.    Gift says, “No, you can’t play on our team.”
7.    “To play on our team, you have to be able to run fast.”
8.    “You have to be able to shoot past the goalie.”
9.    “You have to be able to keep score properly.”
10.    “But you can’t run fast.”
11.    “And you can’t shoot past the goalie.”
12.    “And you can’t even keep score.”
13.    “You can play on our team when you can run fast, when you can shoot past the goalie, and when you can keep score.”
14.    A few years later, Lucky is big and strong.
15.    He can run fast.
16.    He can shoot past the goalie every time.
17.    He can keep score.
18.    He is the best football player in his town.
19.    Gift says, “You can play on our team now!”
20.    Lucky says, “No, thank you. I don’t want to play on your team. It always loses.”
