Technical Handbook on the Domestication of Crithmum maritimum L. (Case of Tunisia): A Review and Experimental Insights

This technical handbook presents a comprehensive guide on the domestication of Crithmum maritimum L. (sea fennel) in Tunisia, combining a literature review with experimental insights. Developed within the framework of the PRIMA SEAFENNEL4MED project and doctoral research at INRGREF (Tunisia), the work integrates botanical, ecological, and socio-economic perspectives with practical cultivation methods. The handbook provides detailed sections on the species’ origin, morphology, ecology, distribution, and uses, followed by guidelines for seed biology, vegetative propagation, agronomic practices, and post-harvest handling. Experimental trials conducted in northern and southern Tunisia highlight the potential of C. maritimum as a climate-resilient halophyte capable of thriving under saline and drought-prone conditions. Aimed at farmers, researchers, students, development practitioners, and stakeholders in agri-food, cosmetic, and nutraceutical sectors, this document seeks to support the establishment of pilot plantations, nurseries, and sustainable value chains.
