Telecoupled Climate Risks: Unmasking Hidden Vulnerabilities in Southern Africa's Food Systems

Southern Africa's food systems are increasingly vulnerable to the multi-faceted impacts of climate change, yet traditional risk assessments often overlook the complex and spatially distant interdependencies known as telecouplings. This paper investigates how telecoupled climate risks propagate through globalized trade, financial flows, and socio-economic connections, creating hidden vulnerabilities within the region's food security landscape. We develop a conceptual framework to analyze the pathways through which climate extremes in distant regions—such as drought in major grain-producing nations or policy shifts in global markets—manifest as localized food system shocks in Southern Africa. Through a comprehensive literature review and a proposed mixed-methods approach, including network analysis of agricultural trade and remittances, the study aims to unmask these obscured linkages. Preliminary findings suggest that disruptions in global supply chains for staple foods, fertilizers, and energy, exacerbated by climate events elsewhere, significantly amplify food insecurity in Southern Africa, particularly for highly import-dependent nations and marginalized communities. The discussion highlights the critical need for integrated regional and international policy responses that account for these systemic, non-local risks, advocating for diversified food sources, strengthened regional trade, and robust early warning systems. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of food system resilience in an interconnected world, offering critical insights for adaptation strategies in climate-vulnerable regions.
