The Biometric Verification Number (BVN) system, introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in 2014, has revolutionized the Nigerian banking sector by enhancing security, reducing fraud, and promoting financial inclusion. This paper explores the impact of the BVN system on banking access and security, its role in curbing fraud, and its parallels with global identification systems such as the U.S. Social Security Number (SSN) and India's Aadhaar system. We also examine the current BVN data update process, the role of commercial banks in maintaining data integrity, and the potential for scaling the BVN framework using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLMs). Furthermore, we discuss the prospects of cross-border collaboration in West Africa and the creation of an African Data Union to enhance regional financial integration and security. The paper concludes with recommendations for improving the current BVN framework and leveraging emerging technologies to ensure its continued success.
