The "collections" of the Meccan Arabic lectionary

This paper deals with the "collections" of the Meccan Arabic lectionary (Syriac : qeryânâ) or Muhammad's exegetical activity in it. In several passages of the Meccan lectionary, Muhammad appears as interpreting passages or logia of previous Scriptures. The verb "to interpret" should be understood here in its double signification, i.e. "to translate" and "to explain". The practice of the targum existed before him among the Jews who explained in Aramaic (or translated into Aramaic) passages of the Hebrew Scriptures so that the believers could understand them. The same practice existed also in the Syriac Churches which had at their disposal the Diatessaron and several lectionaries containing chosen texts for the liturgy. Il est traité ici de l'activité exégétique de Mahomet dans certains passages ou dans une partie du vocabulaire du lectionnaire (syriaque : qeryânâ) mecquois (le " Coran " mecquois). En effet Mahomet y apparaît parfois comme interprétant des passages ou des logia d'écritures antérieures qui elles n'étaient pas en arabe. Interpréter doit s'entendre ici dans le double sens que ce verbe a en français : traduire, ou mieux transposer, et expliquer. Cette pratique du targum existait avant lui chez les juifs qui traduisaient et expliquaient le texte hébreu en araméen. C'était également la pratique des Églises de langue syriaque qui disposaient du Diatessaron et de plusieurs lectionnaires qui contenaient des choix de texte pour l'usage liturgique.
