The Cost of Broken Promises: Conflict, Inflation, and Civilian Suffering in Modern Ethiopia

The modern trajectory of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia serves as one of the most stark demonstrations of rapid developmental reversal driven by intersecting geopolitical instability, armed conflict, and macroeconomic shocks. Once celebrated as one of sub-Saharan Africa's fastestgrowing economies, Ethiopia's post-2020 socio-political landscape has been severely fractured by protracted civil wars, most notably in the northern Tigray region, followed by subsequent insurgencies in Amhara and Oromia. This manuscript examines the profound socioeconomic fallout of these conflicts, focusing on the collapse of the post-1991 anti-famine compact, persistent hyperinflation, foreign exchange shortages, and the resulting humanitarian crisis affecting millions of vulnerable citizens. By synthesizing contemporary data through 2026, this study underscores how systemic state fragility and broken governance promises translate into acute civilian suffering, food insecurity, and deep-seated structural regression.
