This chapter considers
how verbal and non-verbal structures may be represented in the context of
marriage. Urhobo
traditional marriage ceremonies and institution are rich with verbal and
non-verbal structures. Video
recording was used to elicit data during documentation of five actual Urhobo
traditional marriage ceremonies at three Urhobo communities. A widow was also
interviewed to augment the data, especially on areas of differences between
historical and modern Urhobo traditional marriage ceremonies. Moreover, a
comparative study of the data suggests that not all verbal structures are
frequently used in contemporary marriage ceremonies. The endangerment of these
structures is due to the Westernization and Christianization of Urhobo culture,
particularly marriage practices. The paper insists that Urhobo Christians can
use Urhobo marriage terminologies discussed in this paper without compromising
their Christian faith.
