“The Future Is Now” In Coastal Communities In West Africa

In recent years global leaders have been criticized for their lack of commitment to the continuing rise of sea levels. These leaders have failed to recognize that people are already living with the impact of climate change today. Countries like Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, and Togo were significantly affected by coastal erosion, which resulted in a calculated cost of $3.8 billion and the death of 13,000 people each year. As sea levels rise and extreme weather increases in frequency it has led to personal safety, food, and economic security issues for the people from the coastal west African region. Countries like Ghana have around 60% of their animal protein coming from fish now coastal erosion is leading to a loss in their livelihood and heritage for the Ghanaian people. Countries are becoming very individualistic when it comes to solving their climate issues. This will have to change and countries will have to work together to solve the issue of climate change.
