This paper explores the intricate relationship between climate change, human adaptation, and the emergence of the Garamantian civilization in the Sahara Desert. Utilizing archaeological data, historical texts, and climate reconstructions, we analyze how the Garamantes, a pre-Roman kingdom in present-day Libya, responded to environmental challenges and transformed their arid landscape into a thriving polity. We argue that their innovative water management techniques, strategic resource control, and robust social organization were critical in overcoming environmental constraints and establishing a complex trans-Saharan trade network. The study further investigates the potential role of climate fluctuations in the eventual decline of the Garamantian kingdom, highlighting the long-term vulnerability of even the most adaptive societies to environmental shifts. This research contributes to a broader understanding of the dynamic interplay between climate, human agency, and societal development in arid environments, offering valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities facing communities in contemporary climate change scenarios.
