The Global Positioning System (GPS) Based Vehicle Route Tracking System in Nigeria

This study examines the effectiveness; awareness and the challenges that is associated with the adoption of Global Positioning System - based vehicle tracking systems among transport stakeholder in Nigeria. The population comprise personnel from transport companies, logistics firms, government transport agencies, commercial vehicle operators and private vehicle owners, with a sample size of 200 respondents selected using purposive and stratified random sampling techniques, data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analysed using mean scores, standard deviations and t-tests. Findings revealed that while awareness of Global positioning system technology stakeholders is relatively high, adoption remains low due to cost barriers, inadequate training and infrastructural challenge. Results further showed that stakeholders perceive Global positioning system as effective in route optimization, traffic management and free coordination but less effective in areas such as driver accountability, fuel cost reduction and operational transparency. Major challenges identified include high devices cost, insufficient training, poor connectivity and privacy concerns. Hypotheses testing indicated no statistically significant differences in stakeholder responses on awareness, effectiveness and challenges of Global positioning system adoption. The study concludes that while Global positioning system tracking has potential to transform transport operations in Nigeria, its adoption is constrained by technical, financial and policy related barriers. It recommends increased government support, stakeholder training and regulatory frameworks to enhance adoption and utilization.
