THE INFLUENCE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ON WORKFORCE DYNAMICS IN NIGERIA'S INFORMAL AND GIG ECONOMY

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the global labor market, with significant implications for employment and the gig economy in developing countries such as Nigeria. This paper examines the influence of AI on the future of work by exploring its impact on employment patterns, automation, and workforce development within Nigeria’s informal and gig sectors. AI-driven automation is expected to replace routine and repetitive tasks, posing employment challenges for low-skilled workers and increasing the need for workforce adaptation. Conversely, AI also creates new opportunities by expanding demand for freelancers, independent contractors, and professionals with specialized digital skills. Furthermore, AI-powered learning platforms provide opportunities for upskilling and reskilling, enabling workers to remain competitive in an evolving labor market. The study concludes that while AI presents risks of job displacement, it also offers significant prospects for employment creation, innovation, and economic growth, provided that appropriate policies, digital infrastructure, and capacity-building initiatives are implemented to prepare Nigeria’s workforce for the future of work
