Using spatial regression discontinuity methods, we aim to examine how historical exposure to forced cotton cultivation influences several outcome variables in Mozambique. Our estimation strategy will rely on the arbitrarily defined historical borders of the cotton concessions, exploiting the fact that companies tended to absorb as much territory as possible with limited consideration for social and agronomic conditions. Using contemporary individual-level surveys and experimental data collected along the concession border, we will seek to identify a wide range of long-run impacts of the forced labor regime.
