International audience This paper discusses two opposite views on the reconstruction of the typological profile of verb forms in Proto-Bantu and Proto-Bantoid, especially with regards to the presence or absence of object indexation. It points out three problems related to the hypothesis that the object prefixes found in many narrow Bantu languages are reflexes of independent pronouns that were placed in between an auxiliary and the main verb, and later "trapped" in a process of univerbation.
