ABSTRACT
This study was conducted to explore the practice of task-based language teaching strategy during speaking classes. It was carried out in Wako Gutu secondary school grade ten in focus at Finfinne city Ethiopia. The researcher made pre luminary observation during teaching learning in this school. Grade ten students’ speaking performance was poor, they communicate each other with their mother tongue during English class, students’ English language results in a year of 2022 recorded in Wako Gutu secondary school was very low. The recorded data shows, more than forty five percent of the students’ results was less than fifty percent. In cause, the researcher was initiated to carry out the study. To achieve research goal, descriptive research design was employed. Four English language teachers and sixty students who selected from the school in using simple random sampling technique were applied to collect data from the total samples of population. Twenty observation questions were designed with a checklist and used to gather the actual information about practicing TBLT in the class room. Eighteen questionnaires were prepared and distributed for students to gather information about the practice of TBLT. According to teachers’ interview used to collect the data from non-sampling group to gather data. Then the collected data was discussed and analyzed by using statically tables and descriptive paragraphs. As information reveled from the instruments, Task based language teaching-learning strategies user students’ have more advantages than the students who used traditional foreign language teaching-learning strategies. The results of the teachers’ interview shows, practicing TBLT strategy has great advantageous for the students who practice TBLT method. In contrast, most students did not have positive attitude towards the practice of speaking skills by using task based language teaching strategy. The implementation of TBLT in this school was difficult as the schools’ environment situations, bulkiness of students’ text book. The positive effects of practicing task based language teaching-learning strategies were isolated from traditional foreign language teaching based on the findings. It was suggested that grade ten students’ text book should be revised, task based language teaching strategy should be practiced in Wako Gutu secondary school to enhance students’ speaking performance and encourage teachers to practice TBLT to improve student’s speech and students should practice to make their speaking skill accurate and fluent as English language is globalized World.
