The Relationship Between Bride Price and Intimate Partner Violence: A Scoping Review

Bride price generally refers to cash, goods, livestock, or other resources provided before marriage by the groom and his family to the bride and her family. It is widely practiced in the South Pacific, Africa, and parts of Asia, and it serves cultural functions such as legitimizing marriage, establishing affinal alliances, and sustaining social relationships. This practice may influence the occurrence, tolerance, and justification of intimate partner violence (IPV) by shaping gendered power inequalities, perceived rights and obligations, and boundaries of autonomy within intimate relationships. However, because the forms, amounts, symbolic meanings, and articulations of bride price with patriarchal norms vary considerably across sociocultural contexts, its effects are complex. This study aims to map the global evidence on the relationship between bride price and IPV through a scoping review.
