This study examined the role of housing infrastructure in improving livability and promoting
community development in Nigeria. Rapid urbanization and population growth have increased
pressure on existing infrastructure systems, leading to inadequate provision of essential
services such as water supply, electricity, transportation, drainage, and waste management.
These deficiencies have significantly impacted the quality of life in many residential
environments. A quantitative research approach was used, employing a cross-sectional survey
design. Data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to residents in
selected urban areas. Descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, including correlation
and regression analysis, were applied to analyse the data and explore relationships among
variables. The findings revealed that housing infrastructure in Nigeria is generally inadequate
in both availability and condition. Livability levels were found to be moderate but constrained
by poor infrastructure, particularly regarding environmental quality, accessibility, and
residential satisfaction. The study established a strong positive relationship between housing
infrastructure and livability, indicating that infrastructure improvements can significantly
enhance quality of life. Moreover, housing infrastructure was found to have a substantial
impact on community development by facilitating economic activities, improving access to
services, and fostering social cohesion. The study concludes that adequate housing
infrastructure is essential for achieving sustainable urban development and improving living
conditions in Nigeria. It recommends increased investment in infrastructure, effective policy
implementation, and integrated planning approaches to enhance livability and promote
community development.
