The role of isiZulu communal notifications in sustaining the community-orientated lifestyle

The dissemination of communal notifications across spatially dispersed homesteads in rural areas presents significant challenges. Within this context, the study investigated the different forms of communal notifications and their role in sustaining a community-orientated lifestyle in an isiZulu-speaking rural community in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. A qualitative research design was adopted, employing face-to-face interviews conducted in isiZulu with 16 participants. The data analysis revealed a wide range of communal notifications commonly practiced within the community. These included notifications related to social occasions, death, izimbizo (open meetings), instructions to clear footpaths, political gatherings, school meetings, livestock or pet immunisation, and land tilling activities.

The study further demonstrated that the custodians responsible for delivering these notifications rely on specific strategies to ensure effective dissemination across the dispersed community. These strategies include the use of the landscape, announcements at social occasions, whistle or horn blowing, loud vocal calls, and the deployment of messengers. Such methods not only guarantee that information reaches community dwellers but also reinforce collective participation. Importantly, the study found that communal notifications extend beyond their functional purpose of information-sharing. They also play a vital role in cultivating the spirit of ubuntu or humanness among community members. By reinforcing interconnectedness, solidarity, and shared responsibility, these practices contribute to the maintenance of a community-orientated lifestyle deeply embedded in isiZulu cultural expression.
