THE ROLES OF CEREALS ON SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA

One of the major thrusts of millennium development Goals (MDGs) of united nations, is to eradicate hunger and poverty, this is often characterised by low caput per protein and energy consumption needed by average Nigerian on daily basis, overriding effects of this often reflected on total wellbeing and production function of individual. Hence becomes necessitated the increase introduction for cereals crops like maize, rice, sorghum, millet etc. for man and livestock consumption as both are close competitors. Consequently, low cereal production will lead to high cost of conventional feedstuffs or feed ingredients for manufacturing industries and staple food for human consumption. There is obvious need for deep knowledge into the hindrances and problems facing cereals cultivation to ensure Nigerian industry with required manpower development needed for sustainable poverty alleviation. This paper addresses the issues and problems relating to importance, constraints and imperative of cereals crop for sustainable agricultural production in Nigeria. Certain approaches to improving cereals crop production for sustainable development have been outlined.
