The spatial extent of agroforestry lands in Africa

We produced a 100 m resolution map of the spatial extent of agroforestry lands in Africa for 2019, using 10 m resolution tree canopy cover data derived from PlanetScope and Sentinel-2 imagery. This map explicitly delineates croplands where an agroforestry system is practised by distinguishing tree spatial patterns within croplands, focusing on irregularly scattered trees and trees aligned in rows. 

The spatial resolution is 100 m, with the binary values 1 and 0 representing agroforestry land and other lands, respectively.  All raster data and field sample files from this study are described below:

1) Agroforestry_potential.tif (Fig. 6a. 1: Agroforestry with scattered trees, 2: Agroforestry with trees in rows, 3: Agroforestry with both types). 

2) Agroforestry_scattered_in_croplands.tif & Agroforestry_tree_row_in_croplands.tif. The final agroforestry land map at 100 m resolution after overlapping the potential agroforestry map with the cropland data from Potapov et al. (Fig. 6c, d). 

3) Agroforestry_other_type_in_croplands.tif.  Fig. S9. 

4) africa_linear_tree_bin_mosaic.tif. Map of trees in rows at 10 m resolution. This map presents the distribution of trees in rows, generated using the U-Net model with ~3,8000 manually labelled tree-row samples, including features such as crop field windbreaks, street trees in urban areas. However, because urban environments have more complex background signals and finer spatial patterns, the 10 m resolution used here may not fully capture urban tree structures. Therefore, the tree-row information in urban areas should be interpreted with caution and considered as indicative only.

5) Distance_of_tree_pixels_100m.tif. Fig. S10. 

6) Africa_agroforestry_fields1.xlsx. The reference sites of agroforestry from literature as a comma-separated file (.csv) with the following attributes: Site location: “Country”, “Longitude”, “Latitude”, “County/Village”; Information of field sites: “Site year”, “Site area”; Crop type and tree planting forms: “Crop type”, “Woody type”, “Forms of tree distribution”, “Tree distances”; Reference: “Author” and “Publication year”.
