The Tension between Recognition and Assimilation in the Publications of the Kume dungu Publishing House (1983–1998)

This chapter explores the complex relationship between recognition and assimilation in the context of Mapuche language publications, particularly focusing on the Kume Dungu publishing house. The historical tension between these two concepts is evident in the earliest missionary period (1606-1894) and persists through the ethnographic period (1895-1980) and the institutional period (1981-present). The Kume Dungu publishing house, which emerged from writing workshops for Mapuzugun speakers, prioritized the Mapuche language in its publications, but its ultimate goal was biblical translation, raising concerns about evangelization and assimilation. While the publishing house has contributed significantly to the revitalization of Mapuzugun, its limitations and potential biases must be acknowledged. The study highlights the need for a dialogue of spiritualities, respect, and acceptance of otherness, rather than denial or colonization. Ultimately, the Kume Dungu publishing house's legacy serves as a valuable resource for learning Mapuzugun and promoting its autonomy, despite the complexities and challenges surrounding its mission.
