The US-China Strategic Rivalry and Its Implications for Trade Policies in West Africa

The current strategic rivalry between the U.S. and China has far-reaching implications for the geopolitics of the world, with considerable implications for the economic development of regions such as West Africa. This study examined the US-China strategic rivalry resulting from the competition in the political, economic, and social environments of the region. The study used a mixed-methods approach by incorporating the results of expert interviews, government publications, and policy analyses, with the use of quantitative data on the economic environments of the region. The findings suggest that the U.S.-China competition has led to shifting patterns of trade, investment, and diplomatic relations in West Africa. As China has strengthened its economic presence in the region through initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the U.S. has responded with alternative strategies such as the Prosper Africa initiative, aiming to counter China's growing influence. This study emphasizes that, while there is competition between the US and China, there is also potential for economic growth and infrastructure development. Nevertheless, there is a concern about dependency, debt, and geopolitical issues. Finally, there is a call for a more nuanced approach to regional development, with a need to ensure that West African states have economic diversification policies that promote self-reliance.
