The value of Research Software Engineers

Presented online on 18 October 2023 as part of the NITheCS Mini-school lecture series on Research Software Engineering, organised by South Africa's National Institute for Theoretical and Computational Sciences.

This talk discusses the key role of Research Software Engineers (RSEs) and other Research Infrastructure roles in turning research into practice at the Alan Turing Institute - the UK's National Institute for data science and artificial intelligence. The talk outlines the work of the Research Engineering Group and other Research Infrastructure teams at the Turing in advancing the Institute's research, applying that research in practice and supporting the Institute's research community to ensure that it's work is reproducible and reusable. It also highlights some of the wider research infrastructure work these teams have led across the UK's broader data science and artificial intelligence community, and how the Turing has established and developed these critical roles and teams at the Institute.
