This paper identifies types of reported speech in the novel Bait by David Albahari, with a specific focus on the subtypes that result from variations of the two gram- maticalised types of reported speech: direct and indirect speech. The aim of the research is twofold: (a) to analyse all types of direct and indirect speech found in the novel, and (b) to shed light on syntactic and stylistic effects achieved through their usage. The theoretical and methodological framework of the paper is based on Kovačević 2012a, 2012b. By applying analytical method and descriptive research, the following types of reported speech were identified in the novel: regular direct speech, introduced free direct speech, fragment- ed quotation or fragmented direct speech, direct monologic speech, basic (gramaticalised) form of indirect speech, non-connective indirect speech, and expressive indirect speech.
